ASTR — Astronomy: Catalog Entries8 catalog course(s) on file. Undergraduate courses are numbered 100–499; graduate courses 500–699. See the department page for faculty and program information. ASTR 101 — Introduction to the Solar System(3 cr.)Surveys the formation, structure, and dynamics of the Sun, planets, moons, and small bodies of the solar system. Topics include planetary atmospheres, geology, and the search for life beyond Earth. No prior physics background is assumed. View Fall 2026 sections of this course ASTR 102 — Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe(3 cr.)Introduces the physical properties of stars, galaxies, and the large-scale structure of the universe. Topics include stellar evolution, black holes, and the Big Bang. Students interpret astronomical data and images throughout the course. View Fall 2026 sections of this course ASTR 150 — Observational Astronomy(4 cr.)Provides hands-on training in the use of optical telescopes and imaging equipment at the university observatory. Students conduct observation projects on planetary, stellar, and deep-sky objects. Data reduction and basic astrophotography techniques are covered. Prerequisite(s): ASTR 101 View Fall 2026 sections of this course ASTR 210 — Astrophysics I(3 cr.)Introduces the physical principles governing stellar structure and evolution. Topics include radiative transfer, nuclear fusion, and the life cycles of stars of varying mass. Problem sets emphasize quantitative physical reasoning. Prerequisite(s): ASTR 102 View Fall 2026 sections of this course ASTR 250 — Planetary Science(3 cr.)Examines the formation and evolution of planetary systems, including comparative planetology of solar system bodies. Students study exoplanet detection methods and current research on planetary habitability. Case studies draw on recent spacecraft mission data. Prerequisite(s): ASTR 101 View Fall 2026 sections of this course ASTR 310 — Astrophysics II(3 cr.)Continues the study of astrophysical phenomena with emphasis on galactic and extragalactic astrophysics. Topics include galaxy formation, active galactic nuclei, and dark matter. Students work with real observational datasets. Prerequisite(s): ASTR 210 View Fall 2026 sections of this course ASTR 340 — Cosmology(3 cr.)Surveys the origin, structure, and evolution of the universe as a whole. Topics include the Big Bang model, cosmic inflation, dark energy, and the cosmic microwave background. Students engage with both observational evidence and theoretical models. Prerequisite(s): ASTR 210 View Fall 2026 sections of this course ASTR 495 — Special Topics in Astronomy(2 cr.)Provides in-depth study of a current topic in astronomical research selected by the instructor. Recent offerings have examined gravitational wave astronomy and exoplanet atmospheres. Students complete an independent research paper or project. Prerequisite(s): ASTR 310 |
