CHIN 101 — Elementary Chinese I(4 cr.)Introduces the fundamentals of Mandarin Chinese, including pronunciation, basic characters, and everyday conversational patterns. Students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through communicative activities. Cultural notes accompany each unit of study. Students engage in guided conversation on everyday topics. Character recognition and writing practice continue throughout the course. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 101 View Fall 2026 sections of this course CHIN 201 — Intermediate Chinese I(3 cr.)Builds intermediate proficiency in Mandarin through expanded grammar, vocabulary, and authentic reading materials. Students practice extended conversation on familiar topics. Short compositions develop written proficiency. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 102 View Fall 2026 sections of this course CHIN 202 — Intermediate Chinese II(3 cr.)Continues intermediate language study with increasingly complex grammar and discussion of contemporary Chinese culture and media. Students read short authentic texts and participate in structured discussion. Oral presentations build communicative confidence. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 201 View Fall 2026 sections of this course CHIN 301 — Advanced Chinese Conversation and Composition(3 cr.)Develops advanced speaking and writing proficiency through discussion of contemporary social and cultural topics. Students compose essays and deliver oral presentations in Mandarin. Authentic media sources supplement the textbook. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 202 View Fall 2026 sections of this course CHIN 350 — Chinese Culture and Society(3 cr.)Examines contemporary Chinese society, including family structure, education, and social change, through readings and discussion conducted primarily in Chinese. Students engage with news media and documentary sources. The course strengthens both cultural knowledge and language proficiency. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 201 |
