CLAS 101 — Greek and Roman Mythology(3 cr.)

Surveys the major myths of ancient Greece and Rome and their reception in later art and literature. Students read primary sources in translation alongside comparative mythological theory. No knowledge of Greek or Latin is required.

CLAS 110 — The Ancient World(3 cr.)

Introduces the history and culture of the ancient Mediterranean world from early Greece through the fall of Rome. Topics include politics, religion, and daily life. The course provides a foundation for further study in classical studies.

CLAS 210 — Greek Civilization(3 cr.)

Examines the political, social, and intellectual history of ancient Greece from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period. Students read primary sources in translation, including historical, philosophical, and literary texts. Special attention is given to the development of Athenian democracy.

CLAS 220 — Roman Civilization(3 cr.)

Surveys the history and culture of ancient Rome from its founding through the fall of the Western Empire. Topics include Roman law, religion, and imperial administration. Students engage with primary sources in translation throughout the course.

CLAS 310 — Classical Drama in Translation(3 cr.)

Studies major works of Greek and Roman drama, including tragedy and comedy, in their historical and performance contexts. Students read plays alongside ancient theories of drama. The course considers the influence of classical drama on later theatrical traditions.

Prerequisite(s): CLAS 101

CLAS 330 — Special Topics in Classical Studies(3 cr.)

Provides focused study of a specific topic in classical antiquity chosen by the instructor. Recent offerings have examined ancient medicine and classical rhetoric. Students complete a substantial research paper.
