JOUR 101 — Introduction to Journalism(3 cr.)

Introduces the fundamentals of news judgment, sourcing, and the changing role of journalism in a democratic society. Students analyze current news coverage across formats.

JOUR 110 — News Writing and Reporting(3 cr.)

Develops core reporting skills, including interviewing, fact-checking, and writing under deadline. Students complete a series of news stories based on original reporting.

JOUR 210 — Media Ethics and Law(3 cr.)

Examines the ethical obligations and legal constraints that govern journalistic practice. Topics include defamation, privacy, and press freedom.

JOUR 230 — Digital and Multimedia Journalism(3 cr.)

Covers the production of news content for digital platforms, including audio, video, and interactive storytelling. Students build a multimedia portfolio piece.

JOUR 250 — Feature Writing(3 cr.)

Focuses on long-form narrative journalism and profile writing. Students develop techniques for scene-setting, characterization, and narrative structure in nonfiction.

JOUR 310 — Investigative Reporting(3 cr.)

Trains students in the research methods used for in-depth investigative stories, including public records requests and data analysis. Culminates in a substantial investigative project.

JOUR 330 — Photojournalism(3 cr.)

Introduces the technical and ethical practice of photographing news events. Students build a photo essay portfolio addressing a self-selected subject.

JOUR 410 — Editing and Publication Design(3 cr.)

Covers copyediting, headline writing, and visual layout for print and digital publications. Students edit and design a full publication as a final project.

JOUR 495 — Senior Capstone in Journalism(4 cr.)

Capstone course in which students produce a substantial original reporting project from proposal through publication. Work is evaluated by faculty and visiting industry professionals.
