MUSC 101 — Music Theory I(3 cr.)

Introduction to the fundamentals of tonal harmony, including scales, intervals, and diatonic chord function. Students complete written exercises and analyze short musical excerpts. Aural skills are developed in a companion laboratory.

MUSC 102 — Music Theory II(3 cr.)

Continuation of tonal harmony with emphasis on chromatic harmony, modulation, and voice leading. Students compose short pieces applying concepts studied in class. Analysis of repertoire from the common practice period is emphasized.

MUSC 111 — University Chorale(1 cr.)

Large mixed-voice ensemble rehearsing and performing choral literature spanning multiple eras and styles. Membership is open to all students by audition. Public performances occur each semester.

MUSC 120 — Applied Lessons I(2 cr.)

Individualized instruction on a primary instrument or voice, tailored to the student's current skill level. Weekly lessons are supplemented by a jury performance at the end of the semester. May be repeated for credit on a different instrument.

MUSC 150 — Introduction to Music History(3 cr.)

Survey of Western music from antiquity through the twentieth century, with attention to major composers and stylistic periods. Listening assignments develop critical listening skills. No prior musical training is required.

MUSC 210 — Music Theory III(3 cr.)

Advanced study of harmonic and formal analysis, including chromatic harmony and post-tonal techniques. Students analyze extended works and complete guided compositions. Builds directly on skills developed in the introductory theory sequence.

MUSC 220 — Applied Lessons II(2 cr.)

Continued individualized instruction at an intermediate level, with repertoire selected to expand technical and expressive range. A jury performance is required at the semester's conclusion. Students are expected to practice regularly outside of lessons.

MUSC 250 — Music History I(3 cr.)

Focused study of music from the medieval period through the Baroque era. Students examine the social and cultural contexts that shaped musical style. Primary source readings supplement recorded listening.

MUSC 251 — Music History II(3 cr.)

Focused study of music from the Classical era through the twentieth century. Attention is given to the evolution of orchestral, chamber, and vocal forms. Students complete a research paper on a composer or work of their choosing.

MUSC 310 — Conducting(3 cr.)

Introduction to baton technique, score study, and rehearsal strategies for choral and instrumental ensembles. Students conduct peer ensembles in class and receive recorded feedback. Emphasis is placed on gesture clarity and musical interpretation.

MUSC 340 — Orchestration(3 cr.)

Study of instrumental ranges, timbres, and combinations for arranging and composing for ensembles. Students complete original orchestrations for small and large ensembles. Scores are workshopped in class discussion.

MUSC 495 — Senior Recital(2 cr.)

Culminating public performance showcasing repertoire developed throughout the student's applied lessons. Students prepare program notes and undergo a pre-recital jury. Serves as the capstone experience for performance majors.
