SPAN 101 — Elementary Spanish I(4 cr.)

Introduction to the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation for students with little or no prior experience. Communicative activities build basic conversational skills. Cultural readings introduce students to the Spanish-speaking world.

SPAN 102 — Elementary Spanish II(4 cr.)

Continuation of elementary Spanish with expanded vocabulary and grammatical structures. Students develop greater fluency through paired and group conversational practice. Short readings and videos introduce additional cultural contexts.

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 101

SPAN 201 — Intermediate Spanish I(3 cr.)

Further development of grammar, vocabulary, and conversational skill at the intermediate level. Authentic texts and media are introduced to build reading and listening comprehension. Class is conducted primarily in Spanish.

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 102

SPAN 202 — Intermediate Spanish II(3 cr.)

Continued intermediate study emphasizing more complex grammatical structures and idiomatic expression. Students engage with short stories, articles, and film in Spanish. Oral presentations build confidence in extended spoken discourse.

SPAN 250 — Spanish Conversation and Composition(3 cr.)

Intensive practice in spoken and written Spanish at an advanced-intermediate level. Students write essays and participate in structured discussions on contemporary topics. Emphasis is placed on accuracy and fluency in equal measure.

SPAN 310 — Introduction to Hispanic Literature(3 cr.)

Survey of representative works of Spanish and Latin American literature from multiple periods and genres. Students develop skills in literary analysis while continuing to build language proficiency. Discussion and writing are conducted entirely in Spanish.

SPAN 330 — Spanish Phonetics and Pronunciation(3 cr.)

Focused study of the sound system of Spanish, including regional variation in pronunciation. Students complete guided exercises to refine their spoken accuracy. Recordings are used for self-assessment and improvement.

SPAN 360 — Latin American Civilization and Culture(3 cr.)

Study of the history, art, and social movements that have shaped Latin America from the colonial period to the present. Readings and films provide varied cultural perspectives. Discussion is conducted in Spanish.

SPAN 495 — Senior Seminar in Hispanic Studies(3 cr.)

Capstone seminar in which students research and write an extended paper in Spanish on a literary or cultural topic. Drafts are workshopped in a seminar setting. Serves as the culminating experience for the Spanish major.
