Southgate Launches B.S. in Data Science for Fall 2026
Southgate University will launch a new Bachelor of Science in Data Science beginning with the Fall 2026 semester, the university announced this week. The interdisciplinary program is jointly administered by the College of Engineering & Computing and the Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts & Sciences.
The curriculum combines coursework in statistics, machine learning, and applied computing with a required practicum in which students work with a regional employer or research lab on a real data problem. Faculty say the program was designed in consultation with employers across healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services.
"Our students have been asking for this for years, and our advisory board of employers has been asking for it too," said Dr. Hana Voss, the program's founding director. "We built it to be rigorous but also immediately useful."
Admissions officials say the program has already drawn strong interest among incoming first-year students, with more than 90 declared majors for the inaugural fall cohort, a figure that exceeded internal projections.
