About Southgate University
Southgate University prepares students for lives of consequence through a rigorous liberal arts foundation, professional and pre-professional programs of the highest quality, and a campus community that values curiosity, integrity, and service. Grounded in its founding commitment to educate students of every background, Southgate combines close mentorship, hands-on research, and civic engagement with the Averton community to develop graduates who think critically, act ethically, and lead responsibly in their fields and their communities.
Founded in 1894, Southgate enrolls about 9,400 students — 7,800 undergraduates and 1,600 graduate students — on a 210-acre wooded campus along the Cascade River in Averton, Ohio. Our five colleges house 48 academic departments and more than 70 degree programs.
